Safety Specialist (Compliance)

NiSource – Merrillville, IN

This role will be focused on the creation, implementation, and administration of safety & health compliance programs (ex: Lockout/Tagout, DOT Motor Vehicle Reviews, Asbestos, etc.). A hybrid work schedule is available for this role with at least two remote days each week.

Implements, coordinates and supports the health and safety programs within the NiSource, Columbia Gas, and NIPSCO with a specific focus on providing safety and health support to gas and electric operations. Programs may involve all aspects of the management system including, auditing, permitting, program development, safety consulting, site consultation, and hazard and risk mitigation. Position will provide professional expertise for the solution of health and safety challenges.
Position is responsible for interpreting, developing, and implementing policies, plans, and procedures dealing with a wide variety of health, safety and environmental issues. Issues are routinely related to Federal, State or local regulations. Position involves providing sound safety and health consultation to operations and construction leadership and all employees including safety programs, training and initiatives.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures/coordinates compliance with all OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company policy procedure requirements for safety and health activities.
  • Revises existing safety and health materials, programs, systems or procedures for all construction assigned facilities within the business segment. Develops new training materials, programs, systems or procedures for operations and construction related safety issues.
  • Prepares and obtains safety permits or approvals.
  • Prepares formal comments on new rules and regulations for submission to State or Federal agencies. Acts as a company representative for interaction with regulatory agencies, inspections, etc.
  • Collaborates with peers to prepare Policies, Plans and Procedures to be implemented across multiple business units. Develops or oversees the development of project or site specific safety plans, local and state safety committees, investigation or remediation work plans, etc.
  • Effectively works independently or as a member of a project team or leader of a project team of Coordinators.
  • Negotiates simple issues with State, Federal or County regulators.
  • Expected to understand when to seek assistance from attorneys, other experts, governmental officials to assess and act on occupational safety and health circumstances.
  • Prepares summaries, inspection forms, interpretations, etc. for operations and construction on the requirements of new or existing OSHA, EPA, DOT or other regulations.
  • Works closely with gas and electric operations and construction personnel to oversee and maintain safety programs, systems, safety teams and procedures
  • Recommends improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment, to minimize the hazard potential or safety and/or environmental impact.
  • Prepares technical materials or independently collects data to assist more senior staff in the preparation of complex air, water, waste or natural resource permit applications or evaluating safety and health issues. Prepares simple permit applications.
  • Oversee safety performance data and statistics including safety loss event notifications and near miss reporting programs, assist in post-incident root cause Investigations, and overall occupational safety and health management programs.
  • Recognized as a company expert.

Required Qualifications For Position

  • College Degree in Occupational Health and Safety Management, Safety Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or other safety-related field. Equivalent experience may be substituted in part.
  • One to five years of experience in one or more of the functional areas such as occupational safety, risk management, environmental, auditing, regulatory compliance, etc.
  • Work independently and use professional judgment.
  • Ability to compose technical information, prepare manuals, policies, procedures and scripts.
  • Diversified and thorough knowledge of state and federal safety and health regulatory programs required, with natural gas distribution specific knowledge preferred.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with employees at all levels of the organization and from other organizations.
  • Proficient with computers and other modern office equipment.
  • Ability to take direction from a variety of people and processes and work as a member of a team.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities.
  • Sound leadership abilities and integrity.
  • Place: 80% indoors; 20% outdoors. Sitting 75%, standing/walking 15%, and kneeling/bending/stooping 5%. Overtime and travel (10%) required. Motor vehicle check required.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Graduate degree in Health & Safety or related field.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) credential.
