May 2020 President Letter

Dear Members and Students

Our lives still continue to be impacted by the Coronavirus.  Daily routines, both professionally and personally, are still affected, and we find ourselves searching for what is “normal” in our lives today. Additionally, growing concerns have become evident within our meat and poultry processes where guidance has been given to help protect employees from the virus.  Both OSHA and the CDC have provided direction to help employers safeguard their employees against the virus. Refer to the ASSP website and click on “Covid-19” to further read up on updated information about the virus as well as the steps to take on keeping employees safe within the meat and poultry industries.  The Greater Calumet Chapter Board members continue to keep each of you and your families in our thoughts as you continue to move forward and persevere through this difficult time.

Our May 14, 2020 meeting has been cancelled due to COVID-19.  The topic for this meeting was on “Volunteerism within ASSP.”  Our area director, Brian Oczepek was our guest speaker on this topic.  Brian has graciously accepted to present this topic for next year.  This will be a great opportunity to meet Brian and to see how volunteering can be a positive influence in shaping our leadership skills within our profession.

A survey consisting of several questions was sent out early April for everyone to answer in an effort to receive feedback from the members on how we the board can assist and serve the Greater Calumet Chapter better.  We would like to thank those who responded, and we will take all suggestions and comments into consideration as we continue to plan for 2020-2021.

Elections of new officers for 2020-2021 were to take place during our May meeting.  As a result of the meeting being cancelled, we will be setting up an election poll for the members to cast their votes.  ASSP Chapter Services will send the ballot to all members via email on Monday, May 18.  We ask that you take a few minutes to read the bios of each individual and cast your ballot.

We continue to encourage members of the Greater Calumet Chapter to get involved and share their time and talents with both our professional members as well as our students from Purdue who attend our meetings. If you are interested in helping out in any capacity, please contact one of the board members.

For those who were planning on attending the Safety 2020 Professional Development Conference and Expo, ASSP is going “Virtual.”  If anyone is still interested in participating, you can contact the group coordinator Nance O’Toole at for further information.

Our chapter would like to welcome two (2) new members to the Greater Calumet Chapter.  Their names are Franklin Dunlap and Robert Barski.  We look forward to meeting each of them soon!

Finally, the board would like to wish our student members the best of luck with their finals. For those graduating, much success as you enter the next phase of your career.

Webinar – Effective Resume Writing – April 17, 2020 11:00AM

The Central Indiana Emerging Safety Professionals Group is hosting a webinar on Friday April 17 at 11:00AM.

The goal of this webinar is to emphasize the importance of a well written resume and how to stand out during an interview.  In today’s competitive job market, an effective resume and  interview skills can open up a variety of opportunities.  This webinar will target strategies for resume writing and preparing for job interviews.  It will assist participants to learn how to effectively highlight their knowledge, experiences, and abilities on their resume and during interviews and become better prepared for the interview approach employers are most likely to use today.  At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to ask questions to the hosts regarding apply or interviewing for a new job or position.
