|Dear Members and Students, |
We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
We would like to extend our thanks to our guest speaker Mr. Pete Engelbert for presenting at our November meeting on “Investigating Tips and Tricks.”
It’s hard to believe that December is here and that 2021 is coming to an end. After this month, our Greater Calumet Chapter’s year is half over. As we reflect, our chapter has been fortunate to have had some wonderful guest speakers share some valuable information and experiences with us. We, the Board members, hope that each of you have been able to take and incorporate the information presented in both your professional and personal lives.
Our next technical meeting will be held on December 9, 2021 at Purdue University Northwest Student Union Library Building, Room SULB 321. This month our meeting will be a lunch meeting beginning at 12:00p. As in the past, we will follow the same format and begin with registration and lunch. At 12:30p, we will start our meeting with welcoming everyone, providing announcements, and leading into the introduction of the guest speaker. Again, our meeting will also be held via zoom for those who want to participate but feel more comfortable attending in this manner. The link to join the meeting will be posted on our website as well as in the monthly meeting announcement sent to all our members.
Our guest speaker, Mr. Robert Salinas, will be presenting on “Interactive Distracted Driving,” a topic for the modern times on an exposure that affects everyone of all ages, young and old. Whether you’re a pedestrian, on a bike, a passenger, or driving any type of vehicle, distracted driving has become a major concern. This presentation encourages an interactive understanding of how distractions while operating a motor vehicle significantly contribute to accident frequency and severity resulting in property damage, injury, and fatalities. These losses affect company production and profitability. More importantly, they can have a permanent effect on friends, family, and ourselves. This presentation will help provide an understanding of the different types of distractions and how to recognize, reduce, and eliminate these distractions while operating a vehicle. Mr. Salinas is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST); Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Loss Control Consultant and Construction Safety Matter Expert (CSME). He has 36 years of construction and industrial insurance consulting experience; 5 years’ experience as a construction safety manager for the Steel Mills; and has been a member of ASSP for 41 years.
As mentioned earlier in the year, the current board members two (2) year term is coming to an end and the Greater Calumet Chapter will be holding an election to fill the positions on the board. In accordance with our bylaws, we are required to form an Elections and Nominations Committee, which consists of the following individuals: Chairperson: Terry O’Grady, Shoji Nakayama, and Jim Jaracz. This Committee will be approving the slate of officer candidates for this upcoming election. If interested in holding a position on the board, please let one of the board members know, and we can share the details of the position and the time commitment required. If running for a board position would not work and you are interested in volunteering your time and talents to the chapter, let us know and we can let you know how you can assist.
The board members of the Greater Calumet Chapter would like to wish our students the best of luck on their finals and for those students who are graduating, the best of luck as they begin their next phase in life. Additionally, we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Please mark your calendar for our first technical meeting of 2022, which is scheduled for February 9, 2022. Further details will be forthcoming.
Again, wishing each of you a best and safe holiday season! Please stay healthy and safe.
Michele M. Crider
