September 2021 – President Letter

Dear Members and Students:

As we begin our year, the Board hopes that everyone is staying healthy.  During this summer, we met on several occasions to provide a schedule that would offer alternative opportunities for all to be able to attend our monthly meetings. I am happy to say that we have scheduled a variety of topics and times for this year’s technical meetings which we hope will work for everyone’s busy schedule.

As we move toward the start of this year, the Greater Calumet Chapter will be hosting our meetings both in person and virtually.  In person meetings will be held at Purdue University Northwest Student Union Library Building. Our first meeting will be held in Room SULB 321 on September 9, 2021 where our speaker Joseph Liberti will be presenting on the 2021 revisions to NFPA 70E.  Joe is the Senior Regional Manager of Protective Apparel at Cintas Corporation.  Joe consults with local and national companies to design PPE programs for various hazards including electrical safety, flash fire, and molten metal.  Since 2002, his primary focus has been electrical safety solutions for compliance with NFPA 70E, the standard for electrical safety in the workplace.

As in the past, our meetings will begin with registration and breakfast at 7:00 am, allowing members and students to socially reconnect with one another.  At 7:30 am, we will begin our meeting welcoming everyone, providing announcements, and leading directly into the introduction of our presenter. For those who choose to attend via Zoom, click on the link provided to attend.

This year’s ASSP Leadership Conference is scheduled for October 21, 2021 through October 22, 2021.  This event will be held virtually.  There are many opportunities, within this event, to engage in leadership development and networking amongst our fellow safety professionals.  Registration is open to all members.  We encourage everyone to consider attending this event as it is a great opportunity professionally. Please visit the ASSP website for further details regarding the conference.

This year, the Greater Calumet Board will be completing their second year of their term.  At the end of this year, the chapter will be holding an election for new board members. If anyone is interested in a position on the board, please let one of us know, and we will be happy to provide the details of the commitment involved.  If a board position does not work and you would still like to assist the chapter in a volunteer capacity, please see one of the board members, and we will be happy to let you know how you can assist.  Further details of the election processes will be provided at a later date.

We look forward to this upcoming year.  Even though we are still encountering many unknowns with this pandemic, we are encouraged that this year will be even more successful than the past.  With everyone’s support and positive energy, we will conquer and persevere.  Again, please mark your calendar for our first meeting of the 2021-2022 year on September 9, 2021.

Looking forward to seeing everyone! Please stay healthy and safe.
