August/September 2020 President Letter

Dear Members and Students,

As we move forward into the start of a new year, we still are encountering many unknowns with this pandemic.  With these uncertainties, the Greater Calumet Chapter plans to hold the monthly meetings virtually, at least for the first half of the year.  Throughout the summer, the Board has met working diligently on a schedule.  I am happy to say that with everyone’s commitment to this chapter, we have a great line up of topics for this year’s technical meetings.

In the past years, the Greater Calumet Chapter hosted the monthly meetings at Purdue University Northwest Student Union Library Building in the “Room with the View.” However as previously indicated, we will hold our technical meetings virtually, at least for the first half of the year (September-December).  Our first meeting will be held on September 10, 2020 when our speaker Mr. Brian Oczepak will present on “Leadership – Utilizing ASSP Leadership Opportunities to Transform Your Personal Leadership Performance.”  Mr. Oczepak has over 20 years of experience in the Health and Safety field.  He earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Resources Management from Grand Valley State University and achieved his CSP in 2006.  Mr. Oczepak has been active in ASSP since 2001 and has held various roles with the West Michigan Chapter, and he currently serves as ASSP’s Region VII Northern Area Director. Please save the date!  We are very excited to have him kick-off our first meeting of the new year.

Our meetings this year will be held via Zoom.  In order to join our meetings, each month we will provide a link allowing access.  The link will be posted on our website as well as in the monthly meeting announcement sent to all our members.  The chapter plans to follow the same format as in previous years minus the breakfast.  We will promptly begin virtually at 7am, where members and students can socially reconnect with one another.  At 7:30am, we will begin our meeting with welcoming everyone, providing announcements, and leading into the introduction of the guest speaker.  During the presentation, individuals attending will have the opportunity to ask questions through the “chat” function, which will then be forwarded to the presenter to answer.

At the end of May 2020, the board provided an “e-ballot” to all the members of the Greater Calumet Chapter to participate in the elections of board members for the upcoming two (2) years.  The result of this election is as follows:  Michele Crider: President, Bob Salinas: Treasurer, Kelly Dwyer: Secretary and Terry O’Grady: House of Delegate.  Congratulations to everyone! If interested in volunteering your time and talents to the chapter, please let one of the board members know and they will be happy to let you know how you can assist the chapter.

With the many new challenges in adapting to our new “normal,” the Greater Calumet Chapter is looking forward to this upcoming year.  With everyone’s help, we will persevere, and we will be ever “wiser” with every challenge we conquer.  Again, please mark your calendar for our first meeting of the 2020-2021 year on September 10, 2020.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!  Please stay health and safe.

Michele Crider
